The summer was a little rough when I returned from overseas but, I am back on my bike and currently have some old and new sponsors. I like to refere to my sponsors as the family because I only ride for companies that make me feel I am part of what they are doing. I have decided after many back and forth moments to stay with Airspeed shoes they have always been home for me! I also feel honored to have returned back to Hitman Bikes Flow Team this was a good move because the bike is lighter and made tough for my old school and new school riding. Six Feet Deep clothing has also been a great sponsor to me over the past two months and I am glad to be a part of this newer company. Fuel Clothing is also fueling the fire for my winter time needs while I plan for some up coming events that will cause me to be outdoors during some winter time shows. Flatmonkey Bmx is starting to return to our Roots as we have learned from our friends at Hitman Bikes! Recently Tim wrote us and sent us the heart felt story...talking with Tim through e-mail riding has been his escape and has kept him pushing forward and overcoming great loss in his life! Here is Tim's story and I want to thank him for his great outreach to Flatmonkey Bmx!

My wife Cyndi and I moved to Louisville KY for a great job opportunity. We were finally catching up on bills , and having a steady source of income coming into the household. We ended up having to leave Louisville after about 15 months for my Mother-in-law. She was becoming fairly sick at a alarming rate.

Well, just a short month ago she passed away , due to kidney failure. For the last 2 years of being back in NW Ohio(in between Windsor Ontario and Cleveland Ohio) we had lost not only my father and mother-in -law, but also my Uncle (on my wife's side of the family).

It has been a lot to take in the last past 24 months , but it teaches you just how short time is, and to never take one day for granted.

So the good news(already ha ha) is that I will be moving back to Louisville KY in a bigger , more spacious home(and even in a better neighborhood yay!) Due to my wife getting her job back in Louisville.

So with all that has tragically happen in the past, I can honestly tell you that "there is light at the end of the tunnel"!

Well thanks for listening to my (shortened and skimmed down) story.

Oh yeah , I am also very excited about my 3-1/2 garage to ride in (ha ha).

Well thanks again for everything.

First off I wanted to put out there that Caleb and I are working on the 1in3 Trinity Energy Drink Flatland Bmx Tour! This is a great thing coming quickly to have a good time...being that stated we are on the cover of Global-Flat http://www.global-flat.com/

Second; I was browsing You Tube tonight for our videos and I read a comment from a rider in Australia....he made a statement about how could I be sponsored? I wil start off by stating that I have never claimed to be the raddest flatlander in the world...I only compete on occasion for fun...There are many riders out there who would kill me with new styles and tricks....I ride for fun, to promote outreach, and promote flatland....Flatland has always been straight freestyle to me which means riding against yourself to get better, have fun, and let others see how cool it is. I am about the art. So the question is how can this guy be sponsored? Well sponsorship is not just about how great of a rider someone is...I work hard with the media, I am cool to others, and I help generate customers for my sponsors...but, more important I am faithful to my sponsors and I work hard for them...all while having a fulltime career and going to school....the other thing I found amusing was this individual had one video of other riders and I have a bunch of myself...so opinions are just that and being a christian I can only pray he really understands what I am all about and not just my riding....I am not upset that he had an opnion on my riding or question if I was sponsored (not to mention the 300+ shows I have performed in the last two years!) I was upset because he claims to ride flatland and I know a lot of flatlanders and they are about supporting each other not bashing them!

This weekend marks a great weekend as we remember those who have fallen to protect our freedoms. I just ask that if you see a soldier, veteran, spouse of a military member take the time to say thank you and please take the time to remember those who have died for our freedom and their families. Many of you who come here are always seeing a small video clip...or hearing about me and updates: My site is focused for youth and I want to ensure our youth are getting a good message. If you found yourself here reading and you are a young man or women into extreme sports or into other things and just reading this I want to tell you Flatmonkey Bmx exist for you. God has blessed me to be here and be able to do shows to reach out to youth and adults. I want all of you to know you and I exist because of God! All of you out there God is talking to you and it is up to you whether you really listen or not! I have been opening my heart lately and struggling with different things like all of us do. However; I am trying to listen hard right now because I know there is a message God is sending to my heart and mind about many different things with my everyday life. So many times someone tells us something in our life and we hear what that say but, do we really hear? Do we listen? The answer many times is no! We pick out what we think is important information and we acknowledge the ideas of what we think we heard! We do this with God sometimes as well. We hear but, we do not really listen. We sometimes become impatient waiting on the answer to our concerns. Stop and pray, read your Bible, and listen! Take the time to wait for an answer.....we sometimes let our own heart and mind lead us....if we would just be patient and let God lead us we would end up in much better places......I pray and read my bible to stay balanced...just like when I am riding flatland I keep my focus on my tricks to stay balanced....pray and the bible does this for me in my life! The biggest change is my bike sponsorship! For those who follow my shows, news and updates you know I come from the old school days of the AFA (American Freestyle Association) Flatland has progressed greatly and I have many friends in the scene from the old days and today. In terms of flatland these days I do not believe there is a difference in old school/new school it is all kinda of mixed together. I do believe in it is Flatland Freestyle and that means ride and have fun and do what you want. My old school traditions and other reasons has helped me go back to my roots. Local youth show some great skate skillz

I love outreaching to young people and for the past year or so I have had the priviledge to know two local youth and watch them progress on their skateboards. When most youth are busting at their local skate parks these two are defining flatland skateboarding in the local neighborhood. At there age and their quick level of style and learning...these two are your future Rodney Mullens.....This video is the styling of Kyle Wallace age 12 and Walter Reed age 13...I would let these two style in a Flatmonkey Demo anytime! Mission Six

"PARTY IN THE FALLS 2008"

While most was out on New Years Rocking out and Partying I decided to party in a whole new way. My party did not involve Drugs and alcohol but, rocking out with Mission 6 and The Rubyz at Party in the Falls 2008. This event hosted the two Radio Disney Bands....Magic, Music, The Bubble Room for kids and various other arts and entertainment. I had a chance to meet the band before they went on stage. These guys performance was amazing and the oldest star is 15 years old. However; they are seasoned performers. I have been doing outreach for a while but, the message they send through their show is amazing...these young Rockers send a positive message about God and their faith and their music is amazing...so amazing I even bought their CD! You will be hearing M6 music at Flatmonkey Bmx performances in the future and who knows we may even team up in the future and you will see me performing Flatland at one of their concerts...If you have kids and want to see an amazing Christian Show you have to see these guys perform....The Rubyz was just as great and the love they showed my daughter was even more amazing...Thanks both of you for a great night of worship....you really set the tone for me....After getting blown away by these two amazing performances I went on stage to perform a Flatland Bmx demo that has been Aired on KFDX Channel 3 and Times Record News Wichita Falls, TX.....God Bless!

I am sure I know what you are thinking! This site is suppose to be about Bmx! Well my first priority is to the man upstairs. This past year has taken me on many journeys but, this one I must share. Being in extreme sports I have been a fan of Stephen Baldwin since he started his extreme ministry and created the Livin Up video and Tour (Although he did not include Flatland....One day he and I will have to talk about that Just kidding) anyway...a few weeks ago I was channel surfing and caught him doing an interview on the Family Network (this was a local Christian Channel we get in Wichita Falls, TX) In was discussing this new book that he and Mark Tabb wrote together called The death and life of Gabriel Phillips. This book kept sticking in my mind all week that week. Finally I was telling my wife about it and on my B-Day she bought this book and the book about Stephen Balwins life coming to know God.....I started with this book....The funny thing is God has a great way of reaching out to us...I have had some great ups and great downs this year....But, the setting of this book was in Indiana and discussed numerous places I visited as a child growing up in Indy. It also touched on many things I have faced in my life....However; the thing that i felt the most is in some way I could identify with every character in the book in some way whether it was within myself or someone I have known through my life...The other funny thing is after finishing this great book I started reading the other...I can tell you I am already starting to grow as a Christian from the first and excited to see where the next takes me...I encourage you whether you are a Christian or not to check out this book...it is filled with entertainment and I promise it will take you on a fun ride with all the twist and turns...you will read it just to get to the end to find out what happens....But, I hope it does connect with your life and helps with some life lesson and ulimately a relationship with God...with all we are experiencing today...God needs to be our number one.....God Bless and Merry Christams!

I’m 19 years old.

Home Town:
I was born in a small village, Jánosháza, Hungary, now I studying at the University of Pannonia, in Veszprém, Hungary.

How Long Have you been riding Flatland?
I bougth my first bike in 2004, I’m practicing seriously since this year, so since 2008.

Name of your video?
My videos title is: Unknown?! – a hungarian bmx flatland video.

How long have you been shooting the video?
The first filming was in 4th of December, 2007, with Lóránt Kozák, but it was just a „test”, seriously filming starts probably 6 month ago, with Dániel Boros.

What is the name of your video going to be?
My video is focusing to hungarian bmx flatland riders, who stand in the background, so they are unknown or underground riders, or just to young. The people dont know their tricks and combos. And working contains more challenge with them, for me. I’m unknown too, hehe.

Do you have a planned release date?
Hehe, that is a good question! Yes, i planned one, it is 31th of November. But, everything can change around this fact.

Who are some of the riders in your video?
In the main section of the video will appear 6 riders, with their private sections.

These riders are:
Lóránt Kozák, Attila Széll, Dániel Boros, Péter Miklósi, Olivér Kállai and Gergő Szájer. Plus a friends section, with some riders, who have great skills too. And the DVD will contains some bonus footage. With this guys i have a good contact, all of them are friends of mine.

What are some of the riders ages?
They are so young, i think! Attila Széll is only 17years old! The others almost finished their teenage years, or just started to be 20+J

What inspired you to make the video?
Nowadays, the young riders are internet riders, and a full length DVD is lost a lot of reputation. The internet is fully filled with poor videos. When anyone want to see a high standard film, with good editing and filming quality, need to searching a lot or need to wait until it releases. So, i decided, i make my own video, i do the best i can, to see in the final video, what i want to see from a video of mine. I give all of my love to flatland into this video. Fortunatly, Hungary has a very strong filming scene too. And i want to show to the world, Hungary have many kick-ass, talented and young riders in the background.

What are some of the riding locations on the video?
The video shooted only on hungarian spots, i dont have any opportunity and money to visit other countries. All riders ride on his home spot usually. But the SGG2008 was a great deal, we filmed there a lot!

Why a Flatland video?
Flatland is my love, my life and it is plays a very important role in my lifestyle. That’s all.

How long have you been involved in Flatland?
Hm…seriously since 2007, i think. I progress so fast:D (or notJ)

What will the price be?

Many people in the bmx world especially young people like shooting video and want to produce their own....what kind of equipment did you use? What advice would you give our young people for shooting a video?
I’m not a professional. My equipment is pretty simple. I have a Panasonic NV-GS 75 video camera. This is a 3 years old one, my family and i bougth it. It has 3CCD system, and recording to super fine DV tape. This camera is good for me. When Attila Széll give me his friends semi-fisheye, i use itJ and i borrow from Dániel Boros a camera standerJ so, this is my „super high-tech equipment”J

My advices: use songs, what you dont heard in other video; try a lot of shooting angles; see awesome-edited films, to get inspired; show to your friends and to others your video, and ask them, what do they think about it; try to be maximalist, do the best you can. Endeavor to make high quality films!

What is the local Flatland scene like where you are from?
I said, i came from a village, where was a guy, but he practiced not very often in 2004, when i started flatlanding. So i was alone for 2 years. After I moved to Veszprém to study, i meet a lot of flatlanders, but from different cities. Unfortunetly, i have only one buddy, who i practicing with, sometimes, and a girl, who just started it. Flatland is dead here, but street is rising…
But i like to be alone when i riding. Totally focusing to the tricks. I hate, when anybody disturb me, when i try to concentrete.
How do you feel the riding style is different if at all in your country compared to other countries or the U.S?
I think, riding style is different between people, not just between countries. Everybody has a different personality, and personality cause the style. I think, the hungarian flatland scene is healthy, everybody know everybody, the riders are friendly, and helpful; the riders try to be original. But nowadays flatland isn’t fashionable. The riding level is so high, but the number of flatlanders are decreasing.

You mentioned you wanted to make the video global! What do you think other countries would benefit from your video?
Other counties people would benefit real flatland from my video. There is no alibi.
Every new international video is interesting, if a flatlander interests for other countries talents, and very good riders. The public will see in my video a lot of hard tricks, original combos, they will know their names, their styles. „This is a beginning of a beautiful” seriesJ

What kind of support have you received shooting this video?
I got a lot of support from the riders who will appear in the video. I try to get in contact with some shops or companies, but they dont interested to me. Unfortunatly. The riders and I dont have any sponsors.

Flatmonkey Bmx is designed to outreach to young riders what advice would you give our young readers about Flatland?
Do it, practicing, speak about it, thinking about it. My favourite sentence is the following: „ride the bikes, and shut up!” (from the Global-Flat forum) (Edited by Flatmonkey Bmx for Language)
But dont forget your real life, your friends, and the study. Flatland is a great sport, and a part of our life, lifestyle, but it will be boring and annoying after some time. Texas Flatland Round Up IV

Last weekend I had the opportunity to head to San Marcos, TX and hang with the Austin, Houston, and SA Town Crew. Chris Balles put on the Texas Round Up IV and thanks to Fringe Clothing for floating me some cash this would soon be a contest I would not forget. I arrived in Austin around 9pm Friday night and rode with Jim McKay, Huck "Lee" Edwars, Mark "Rad Dad" Dandridge, Aaron Frost, and many other Texas Riders. We rode at the historical OG Garage. After a long night of riding and hanging out with great vibe...I headed to Mckay's crib and crashed for the night. Bright and early Saturday Jim and I headed to San Marcos to the fairgrounds and was able to throw down some great sessions and compete. I was happy with a 3rd place finish since this was the first time I was able to compete this year because of my show and work schedule. Everyone was riding great in all the classes and I can say I was glad I was not judging the event...it must have been tough! The final results:

What would you say to young people who want to get sponsored? "The inline industry is so small right now, you should focus on skating everyday and having fun. You will naturally get better and hopefully by the time there is more money and products in the industry a sponsorship will come along."

What is it like to be the inline program director at Camp Woodward Lake Owen? " It's the greatest job I've ever had! I get to teach kids how to skate while still learning myself and even get paid! I feel like I have got an opportunity to influence kids in a positive way with out preaching to them."

How long have you been working at Woodward Lake Owen Camp? I am going on my 5th year as the inline program director.

Where do you see the future of inline going? " Inline skating has always been looked down upon, and I kinda like that. From about 2002-2006, inline skating practically disappeared, which only left the skaters who truly loved it. This is because they felt it was fun not because it was cool. Now, all that is left are those skaters and I believe this has made inline skaters strong and deidcated as possible. People are starting to look for different outlets for expression and creativity and inline skating offers that. So with that core group that have stuck through the low times leading the way, I think that the industry is very prepared to explode again and sustain that growth for a long time!"

Where are your favorite places to skate? Too many......Denver; Irvine, CA; Kansas City; Dallas; Minneapolis, MN; Fayetville, AR; and Atalanta.......

What is your dream trick? Any tricke I have never done before that surpises me when I land it!

Final Words: Do what is fun! Bmx, inline, skateboard, golf, football, whatever.......And it always feel good to do nice things for other people!

If you could change one thing about Bmx what would it be?

Who have been your greatest influences when it comes to riding?

I know you ride park/vert and dirt trails about everyday...do you prefere one over the other and why/why not?

I LOVE RIDING PARK AND TRAILS THE MOST! I LOVE PARK JUST CAUSE THERE ARE ENDLESS POSSABILITIES!! THERE ARE ALWAYS THINGS TO LEARN AND DIFFERENT STUFF TO RIDE! AS FAR AS TRAILS GO I JUST LOVE FLOWING THROUGH A GOOD SET OF TRAILS! AND ALSO WITH TRAILS IF YOU CAN THINK OF IT AND HAVE ENOUGH PEOPLE OUT THERE DIGGING YOU CAN BUILD ANYTHING! You have started to do some shows in Texas lately what has that been like and who have you been doing shows with?

I HAVE BEEN DOING SOME SHOWS WITH THE UNITED FREESTYLE STUNT TEAM. THEY ARE BASED OUT OF FORT WORTH TEXAS. ATOM BAKER IS THE OWNER AND GREAT GUY. HE NEEDED AN EXTRA PERSON FOR A SHOW ONE DAY AND CALLED ME UP AND THEN ABOUT A WEEK LATER I WENT DOWN TO HOUSTON TO DO A SHOW WITH HIM! ITS ALOT OF FUN, I LOVE DOING SHOWS WITH HIM!

I know you work with a lot of young people at your local skate parks and you are a great role model when it comes to push the younger generation to ride....what kind of things do the kids ask you?

CAN YOU DO A BACKFLIP?? THATS PROBLY THE MOST ASKED QUESTION! OTHER THAN THAT THEY ASK ALOT OF QUESTIONS ABOUT MY BIKE, ARE YOU SPONSORED?, WHATS THE BEST TRICK YOU CAN DO, JUST STUFF LIEK THAT! EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH BRETT DOWNS:In the past few months I have had the pleasure to come to know a rider I have looked up to for a long time. The funny thing is when I first talked to this guy I felt like a complete fool because I did not realize who I was talking to! I have always done some flow with SE Bikes and have worked with Todd Lyons for a while. Recently when coming back to ride for SE Bikes Todd told me to hit up Brett Downs the new Team Manager for the Terror Squad. The guys at SE have always been great to me and Todd mentioned this dude was a Flatland legend but, it still did not click. One day I am on the phone with Brett and I dropped a few friends names to see if he was familiar with them. Then he unleashes the secret.....I hear I use to be a Plywood Hood!!!! I about fell down right there. I was talking to a guy I have looked up to my whole life in the flatland world.....Not only that but, this guy rides just about every Bmx discipline imaginable....I was so stoked....So to the readers I know Brett has done some great interviews in the past but, I was able to hit him with a few questions and share them with you here at Flatmonkey Bmx!

Years riding: Since before you were born

Bike: I have different bikes for Flatland, Ramps and Racing.

Best and Favorite Tricks: I could never pick a real best trick but I love G-turns and quick blasting flatland tricks. Beyond that, nothing feels better than going high off any ramp.

Riders who have influenced you the most: Just my friends growing up. Like everybody else. Of course, I grew up with some amazing riders as friends.

Q: I know you have been riding for a while how did you get into BMX?

I started trying to be Evel Knievel when I was a kid. It just progressed from there. I just like riding so I do as many types of BMX as possible.

Q: You ride a lot of disciplines and I know Flatland seems to be a great passion for you.....Do you prefer one discipline over the other?

They are all fun in different ways. Flatland is so accessible since no ramps or obstacles are needed. It is also a good way to push your creativity and abilities. It is also a lot less traumatic injury wise.

Q: In all your riding and travels what has been your favorite spot to ride and why?

Another odd, question. I have favorite skateparks and little flatland corners spread out across many states and cities. You can ride flat near the Applebys in Dunwoody, Georgia or hit up the skatepark in Athens, Ohio. It is more about the session than the place.

Q: How many videos have you been in and which is your favorite and why? I have probably been in 12-15 videos. My favorites are the Dorkins in York series we put out ourselves. I was stoked that Ells Bells put me in as well. Maybe my bit in Dorkins 10.

Q: You have been around BMX longer than most riders especially the new generation of Flatland. Where do you see flatland headed in the future?

I see such an interesting style change with the brakeless, pumping style coming in. It is so different that what I started out doing. I see limitless possibilities. Today's riders are just opening the door further than the riders of the past. Old tricks will be forgotten but that is the way it goes.

Q: This is a question that always gets a lot of Flatlanders going......First; do you believe there is old school compared to new school? Second; if there is a difference in your opinion which do you prefer?

Ok, I will say it- Yes, there is old and new school. I have always said there are also good tricks and lame tricks. I prefer the good ones, no matter if the are old school or new school styles.

Q: Of all the goals you have set in your life which goal have you accomplished that has meant the most to you personally?

In riding, I would have to say that I still do it, have fun and progress. I can't put in 40 hours a week of riding anymore but it hasn't changed that much otherwise. That is what is the best part of BMX to me.

Q: You now work for SE Bikes.....Can you tell the readers a little more about how this came about and what you do?

I saw Todd Lyons at a local race and gave him my number to go ride the local spots. We went out riding and hung out a bit. He showed me around and then he eventually asked if I would like to help him out. I do a little of everything concerning SE Bikes. Todd is the man, I am his back.

Q : Flatmonkey Bmx attracts a lot of newbie Bmx riders or those just coming into the sport......Can you explain what the Plywood Hood were all about and what it was like to be a part of that Team.

Way back about a hundred years ago, riders formed teams and did shows. My friends and I started the Plywood Hoods. We wanted to get great and ride our bikes. We did shows, videos, a tour, competed, invented Jams, laughed, lived, took each other to the hospital, and grew up together. Mostly, we just rode. We all had a similar passion for fun, progression and trying our best.

Q: What advice would you give to those that are just starting out in Bmx?

Don't ride with any goal in mind other than having fun. If it is fun, you will progress both in your own riding and in the BMX world if you choose. If it gets to be a hassle or obsession, you need to lighten up a bit and go ride to 7-11 and get a Coke, sit out front on the sidewalk and look at your bike. It's all about just enjoying life.

Q: I have many young people ask me the age old question how do I get sponsored. What advice would you give these young people?

You have to have some talent first and then ride a ton to hone that talent. You have to offer something to sponsors, not just be a good rider. Be a cool person who can promote. Contests, shows, TV, Videos all get companies exposure. Most of all, be a cool person to everyone you meet.

Q: What are your current goals and where would you like to see yourself in five years/10 years?

Oh, I still plan on riding. I'm stoked on being in the industry and would love to make BMX better for everyone. Down the road I just want to be able to see people riding bikes that I had something to do with. That would be pretty cool.

Q: Do you think you will ever quit or retire from riding a Bmx bike?

Nah, just when I'm physically unable. It has been over 35 years now so how could I stop?

Q: Who do you currently ride with? Well, my best riding buddy just moved so it will be my son, Henry. He and I race and go to the skatepark together. I ride flat alone. Not too many of us out there!

Q: You are now the Team Manager for the SE Terror squad....what is that like and what vision do you have for this program in the future?

Well, the Terror Squad has been a great opportunity for BMX racers. I want to help support riders on any type of SE Bike, racing, freestyle or otherwise. I think the best way to let people know about the quality of SE Bikes is to see them in real life and hop on one. I'm also grateful that SE and I, personally, can help the next generation of riders.

Q: With everything you are involved in right now how do you balance Bmx and your family life?

Well, I believe that people have time for what they think is important. Riding is important to me so I find the time to get out. True, my family and job come first, but the bike is number three in line. The chores are way down the list.

Q:What are your favorite forms of Bmx media?

I have surfed the net for a long time. It's great to get news right away, be able to dig deeply in a topic and talk directly to those involved. That being said, I'm still a magazine reader. I love having something to really absorb. I actually don't see too many DVDs anymore. I catch my video online.

Q: Brett I want to personally thank you, TL and SE Bikes for supporting me this year and for taking time away from your busy schedule to do this interview! Do you have any last words?

Flatclothing Review

A few weeks ago I spoke with Chris Day the owner and rider for Http://www.flatclothing.com I took the opportunity to order a pair of his new pants and a T-shirt. After I made the purchase Chris worked quickly to get my order together and get it shipped to me which was a huge plus with mail order. When my items arrived I was super stoked! The pants are very comfortable and as promised by Chris perfect to ride in! Even though I live in Texas and it is super hot here I stayed cool wearing these pants during a mid morning riding session. The T-shirt was perfect size and has some great graphics....in terms of promoting Flatland I assure you many people will ask about your T-shirt and embroidered design on the pants which will allow you to discuss and explain what Flatland is all about. Before I ordered the pants I saw some posts on the Global-Flat Forum talking about pricing and shipping cost. I personally ride for a couple of companies who sell clothing and I can tell you for the quality and design the price is well worth it. I also have had many T-shirts after a couple of times in the laundry wash and dry that fades or has a loss in comfort. The T-shirt still looks new and wears great!
